SECOND IN YOUR BRAND? CONTENT IS THE CHEAPEST LEVER YOU HAVE

Within one brand, in one city, dealerships are close to identical. Same product on the floor. Same OEM creative in the market. Similar pricing, similar finance, similar servicing offers. The manufacturer works hard to make it so.

Which means if you are number two in your brand in your city, you already know it. So does the group. So does the OEM. And the incentives that come with being number one are real money, not bragging rights.

Here is the uncomfortable part. Almost every lever you could pull to close that gap is either controlled by someone else or matched the moment you pull it.

Price harder and the dealer across town matches you within the week, and now you are both poorer. The OEM’s campaigns run for your rival exactly as they run for you, because the OEM does not care which of its dealers wins, only that the brand does. Facilities, location, franchise terms. Locked, or a decade and millions to move.

Strip all of that away and two genuine variables are left. The people, and the presence. Who buyers deal with, and who buyers already know before they deal with anyone.

01 — PRESENCE IS THE OPEN LEVER

A buyer three weeks into researching their next car is watching video at night. If the useful answers keep coming from one dealership, that dealership walks into the consideration set before a single enquiry is made. Not the brand. The dealership.

That is presence, and content is the cheapest lever on it that exists. It needs no media spend to start working. It compounds instead of expiring. And this is the part worth reading twice.

IT IS THE ONE LEVER THE MANUFACTURER DOES NOT CONTROL AND CANNOT HAND TO YOUR COMPETITOR.

Every other advantage you build inside a franchise system eventually gets systematised and shared, because that is what franchisors do. A library of videos with your dealership’s name on it, answering the questions buyers in your city are actually asking, is yours. There is no co-op mechanism that gives it to the dealer up the road.

02 — THE WINDOW THIS OPENS

Being second is not a fixed condition, it mostly reflects who moved first on the things that were movable. Right now, in almost every brand in almost every city, nobody has moved on this one. Feeds full of delivery photos and reposted OEM ads are the evidence.

Which means the dealer who builds the answer library first is not fighting for share of a crowded channel. They are walking into an empty one. That advantage does not stay available. It goes to whoever moves, and then the second mover is second here too.

If you are already number one, the same logic runs the other way. This is the lever your nearest rival can pull on you, and it is cheap enough that eventually someone will.
